The Deepening Health Crisis: More Cancers and Parkinson’s Linked to Tainted Water at Camp Lejeune, NC

As Camp Lejeune Lawyers in Kansas City, we at Kendall Law Group LLC are deeply committed to addressing the emerging health crisis linked to the water contamination at Camp Lejeune. Our understanding of the profound impact this has had on veterans and their families guides our approach to legal advocacy. The recent findings connecting the base’s contaminated water to a higher incidence of cancers and Parkinson’s Disease underscore the urgency of this issue. We stand ready to support those affected in their quest for justice and fair compensation, recognizing the importance of their stories and the need for legal resolution.

Camp Lejeune’s Toxic Legacy

For over three decades, the waters at Camp Lejeune were contaminated with hazardous chemicals like trichloroethylene (TCE), vinyl chloride, and benzene. This prolonged exposure has cast a long shadow over the health of those stationed at the base, with recent findings indicating a more extensive impact than previously understood.

Presently, the water contamination at Camp Lejeune has been linked to a range of serious health conditions. According to the Veterans Affairs (VA), the following conditions are recognized as being associated with the exposure to the contaminated water:

  • Adult leukemia
  • Aplastic anemia and other myelodysplastic syndromes
  • Bladder cancer
  • Kidney cancer
  • Liver cancer
  • Multiple myeloma
  • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma
  • Parkinson’s disease

In addition to these, the VA also covers treatment for other conditions related to the contamination at Camp Lejeune, including:

  • Breast cancer
  • Esophageal cancer
  • Female infertility
  • Hepatic steatosis
  • Lung cancer
  • Miscarriage
  • Neurobehavioral effects
  • Renal toxicity
  • Scleroderma

These conditions have been identified through studies and investigations conducted over the years, revealing the extensive health impact of the water contamination on former residents and service members at Camp Lejeune.

Expanding the Cancer Risk Spectrum

Recent research by The Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), has expanded the list of cancers linked to contaminated water. Beyond the already recognized conditions, new findings suggest a higher incidence of various cancers, painting a disturbing picture of the health fallout from the toxic exposure.

The new study has revealed that military personnel stated at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina from 1975 to 1985 are at least 20% higher risk for several cancers than those who were stationed elsewhere. These cancers include certain types of leukemia and lymphoma and cancers of the lung, breast, throat, esophagus and thyroid.

Due to these research efforts, thyroid cancer may be added to the list of diseases for which Camp Lejeune victims and their families may be compensated.

The Parkinson’s Disease Revelation

In another significant study featured in JAMA Neurology, researchers, led by Dr. Samuel M. Goldman and his team, focused on the long-term health impacts of water contamination at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. The study compared the incidence of Parkinson’s disease (PD) in service members exposed to trichloroethylene (TCE) and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at Camp Lejeune with those at Camp Pendleton, where the water was not contaminated. The findings revealed a substantial 70% increased risk of PD among Camp Lejeune veterans, who also experienced more frequent early symptoms of PD, such as tremors, anxiety, and erectile dysfunction. This research highlights the serious health consequences associated with environmental exposure to TCE, particularly concerning the development of Parkinson’s disease.
